re-PRESENT: A Research Day at The Luggage Store Gallery,

December 10, 11am to 5.30pm

(1007 Market Street, near 6th St., San Francisco, CA)

This one-day event concentrates on researching artistic practices that happen in the here and now and require both the presence of the artist and the engagement of the viewer/receiver to exist. The projects presented/discussed are by artists Lygia Clark (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 1920“88), Liam Everett (New York, 1973), and Goldin+Senneby (Stockholm, collaboration since 2004).

This research is part of a California College of the Arts graduate Fall 2011 seminar organized by curator Ana Paula Cohen in collaboration with graduate students Ebunolu Alugbin, Will Brown, Dane Jensen, Stephanie Kern, Peta Rake, and Ashley Stull. Focused on the idea of presentation, the seminar posed the question: How can we access an art project or exhibition that only happens in one present moment and make it active in a new context? It was informed by a close reading of the work of Brazilian artist Lygia Clark, as expressed mainly in her writings and the project Lygia Clark, do objeto ao acontecimento [from object to event], developed by Brazilian psychoanalyst and curator Suely Rolnik”a video archive of 66 interviews intending to activate the 26 years of corporeal experimentations of Lygia Clark (1963-88).

re-PRESENT: A Research Day will take shape through a series of screenings and presentations, followed by discussions. The program includes selected interviews from the Lygia Clark: from object to event archive; a lecture and discussion led by Stephanie Kern and Dane Jensen; the unauthorized presentation of the project Looking for Headless by Goldin+Senneby, introduced by Peta Rake, and the presentation of On the wall (the leaking) A Performance in 2 Acts by Liam Everett, in conversation with Ana Paula Cohen.
