The luggage store is honored to present a new body of paintings by Tournesol Awardee Teresa Baker. The Tournesol Award at Headlands Center for the Arts recognizes one Bay Area painter each year, supporting him or her in taking the first major steps toward establishing a career in the Bay Area. The Award is designed to support a full year of artistic work and development, and includes a $10,000 cash stipend, a private studio, and a funded final exhibition or project of the artist™s choice.

Hazel White, an affiliate artist at the Headlands writes of Baker:

œ¦With discipline, but as if absentmindedly, Baker explores in a current of alertness to materials and place”quietly and persistently drawing, painting, cutting colored felt, folding white paper, and tucking and tying string and ribbons and found fabric, and also walking. She™s invoking relationship, making it up continuously until the process trumps itself”into the sought œmoment when she is entirely present, with her materials, decisions, and actions all working together at once.

Asked if her work is becoming sculpture, she says not. œI like the wall. I like the flatness of it. I know for sure the wall must happen, because it is harder for me to work with, and so more interesting. And the material of the work can rely on it. I love flat. I™m from the Plains. And I like things being as they are, an expanse of the material being itself. The wrapping? I was thinking of powwows and shawls. I don™t want the work to be stuck in being a painting, so I™m granting it a little three dimensionality, more autonomy as an object, she says¦.

¦Each result is unfamiliar to her but attractively complicated and singular, not a variation; she can™t identify what™s present, but she™s certain she™s done. œTo leave it there, as a mystery, after the piece itself has directed me toward that”that™s what keeps me making the work, she says. Often there™s something odd left in a piece, such as a rough tying; that way, it keeps some part of its vital constructedness, or its undifferentiated origin, not slipping away into œart.

œ¦in the quiet of Headlands, her colors have gotten brighter, the pieces welcoming, not so stoic. Each one has its identity, as if its making has tipped over a line and articulated an awareness of itself that brokers now into relation”participating in the present with the wall, one or more other paintings, the mark making there and the absence of mark making here, and today with a companion presence, you, the reader/viewer, arriving here with each one.
