Please join us for Jenny Sharaf™s first solo exhibition in San Francisco, CA.
Sharaf will present a brand new body of work in The Luggage Store™s Haight Street Project Space. For this series of gestural abstract paintings on fabric, Sharaf highlights the performative act of painting with a saturated and quasi-psychedelic color palette.
Sharaf is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in San Francisco, CA. Her paintings, installations, videos and works on paper celebrate process, while reflecting on art history, feminism and abstraction. Sharaf is strongly influenced by the Hollywood vernacular and the aestheticization of California, in part because of her family’s background in the film and television business and growing up in Los Angeles. Sharaf™s childhood in LA made her cynical of screens, critical of the media™s gaze, yet intrigued by the spectacle. The new work abstracts these experiences into formal compositions of smooth surfaces, enchanting hues and bold mark-making.
The mythology of the California girl leads the way to tell a complex and fragmented narrative of art making in the 21st century that involves social media, art-world tropes and sophisticated conceptual marketing. Sharaf also has an active curatorial practice which aims to create accessible and fun art events in the Bay Area. Sharaf founded the 24-Hour Telethon at The Lab last year and is the founder and director of Parking Lot Art Fair. Recently, she worked with Creativity Explored in the Mission, to curate a collaborative group show that warranted media attention from Huffington Post, 7×7 Magazine and SF Magazine. Jenny received her MFA from Mills College in Oakland, studying under Amy Franceschini and Glen Helfand. Link to CV
