Brian Long Announcement PDF

The Luggage Store Gallery is excited and proud to present a solo exhibition of mural size landscape abstractions by painter Brian Longe. Longe had a notable exhibition history in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the earlier stage of his career, but then took a twenty-year hiatus from exhibiting while he lived in the Sierras, intensely studying this mountain topography and raising a family. œThe Source a solo exhibition will feature the culmination of his research.

Longe describes the paintings as œmeta-scapes that begin as spontaneous drawings on raw canvas. They employ stream of consciousness (automatism) and biomorphic and geomorphic mapping to produce a vertiginous, mountainous abstraction –with both aerial and frontal views. The drawings are painted first in black and white, and then color with no revision. This immediacy transcribes the surrealist ethos of depiction filtered through an eye for iconography, making them, at first glance, seem transported from mid twentieth century, where their true energy emerged.

A limited edition catalog of Longe™s work will accompany the exhibition and will be for sale at the show.

This exhibition is made possible with funds from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the SFAC/Cultural Equity Fund, The Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Grants for the Arts of the Hotel tax Fund and The San Francisco Foundation.
